The ACAS guide ‘Discipline and Grievances at work’ suggests the following 6 points:
- Remember this is not the same a disciplinary hearing so discussion and dialogue may lead to an amicable solution
- Remain impartial and objective at all times
- Invite the employee to restate their grievance and how they would like to see it resolved
- Sum up the main points at the end
- Tell the employee when they can expect to hear a response (in line with the organisation’s’ Grievance Procedure)
- If there is a delay in responding, make sure the employee is informed
