How to conduct a Grievance Hearing

The ACAS guide ‘Discipline and Grievances at work’ suggests the following 6 points:

  • Remember this is not the same a disciplinary hearing so discussion and dialogue may lead to an amicable solution
  • Remain impartial and objective at all times
  • Invite the employee to restate their grievance and how they would like to see it resolved
  • Sum up the main points at the end
  • Tell the employee when they can expect to hear a response (in line with the organisation’s’ Grievance Procedure)
  • If there is a delay in responding, make sure the employee is informed
